City as a Park
Charlottesville, Virginia

1998 ASLA National Merit Award 1997 Charlottesville Chapter AIA Visions Competition Prize

Recognized by the ASLA with a National Merit Award, “The City as a Park” transforms the traditional park master plan into a dynamic document that functions as an educational resource for citizens and a guide for designers and City staff. Guided by community involvement, we worked to address the ideas and concerns expressed in a series of neighborhood meetings and design reviews. Research on the park system revealed seven major themes: history, plants, program, storm water, accessibility, connections, and neighborhood identity. The vision that evolved connects diverse public lands owned by the City of Charlottesville and Albemarle County into an integrated system.
