Our design for Booker T. Washington Park, the first African American park in Charlottesville, evolved from a study of the site’s rich cultural history. A grass and concrete stepped ramp unites the top and bottom levels of the park. The lower level features a tree-lined walk identifying the boundary of a parcel once owned by an emancipated slave. New play areas and a basketball court are located on the top of the hill under mature white oak trees. A new pavilion built on the site of the “Barn,” an original park structure funded and constructed by the black community in 1934, presides over an adjacent green that accommodates community gatherings.
