Situated on a steeply sloping hillside, the La Punta house is connected to the surrounding landscape by a series of minimalist courtyard gardens. Designed to feature the beauty of the native landscape, the gardens are planted with appropriately scaled species that create a diversity of outdoor spaces. Courtyard spaces adjacent to the house feature simple plantings that emphasize color and texture. Site walls of black volcanic rock create a series of terraces that connect the house to the flood plain below. The sculptural form of the multi-trunked native oaks (Quercus laurina and Quercus muhlenbergii) surrounding the house create dramatic shadow patterns on the white stucco walls.
