Meadow House
Great Falls, Virginia

The site design for this project reinterprets the traditional elements of a Virginia country estate – hedgerows, allée, orchard, pools, and terraces – with a modernist sensibility. Stacked Buckingham, Virginia slate walls extend from the front and rear entrances of the house to organize the entry sequence and connect the house to the land. The original pool was replaced with a travertine terrace and a black plaster swimming pool. A new screened porch pavilion provides a protected outdoor room and a view to the two minimalist negative-edge pools beyond. When viewed from the pavilion, the two pools visually create one large mirror, reflecting the sky and the surrounding landscape. A metal stair adjacent to the tall stacked slate wall connects the upper pool terrace to the spa below.
